Winter in New Orleans and Louisiana

Louisiana and New Orleans: Unusually Festive

The lead up to Christmas is a brilliant time to explore the state and the city, there are less tourists and it is still warm enough to eat outside and enjoy some different events that will get you in the festive mood!

Celebration in the Oaks (27 November – 2nd January) is a beautiful celebration where the whole of City Park in New Orleans is illuminated with thousands of colourful lights and displays.

Of course, in a city known for parades, December starts off with the Krewe of Jingle holiday parade along St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street. Enjoy parade floats, marching bands, Christmas Characters and more.

The Festival of Bonfires is a beautiful experience in Lutcher, Louisiana. They happen on the second weekend in December and are a run-up to the famous Christmas Eve bonfires. Visitors can enjoy great food, live entertainment, crafts, carnival rides and Santa’s Very Merry Forest. The Bonfires on the Leveeare a wonderful Cajun tradition where 100s of bonfires are lit along the Mississippi in southern Louisiana on Christmas Eve to guide “Papa Noel” on Christmas Eve.

Reveillon, a large celebratory meal after midnight mass on Christmas Eve is still celebrated in New Orleans. The only difference is that now the meal is celebrated in restaurants throughout the city and the menu combines Creole cuisine and contemporary New Orleans food.

Those looking for fun in the sun this winter may enjoy the Mardi Gras Season throughout Louisiana.Parade season begins on 6th January and the final day is Mardi Gras Day, or Fat Tuesday on the 9th February 2016. This is a time for parties, parades and balls and there are a variety of Mardi Gras Season celebrations on throughout Louisiana Mardi Gras in New Orleans is sort of like Christmas and New Orleanians begin celebrating with a variety of parades until Mardi Gras. The weekend to join the fun is 5-9th February 2016 and it is best to be there before 5th February 2016.
